I wouldn’t bother. Short ram intakes deliver minimal to no power gains (even negative for the **** cheap intakes) anyway, with or without a heat shield. They’re really only good for the sucking induction noise, if you like that kind of thing

My car already has a long tube one (bought it like that). I just don't want a drowned 2AZ. I know the power gains will be **** though.

I'm thisssss close to selling my miata. Such a sad day but it was gonna come sometime.

Gonna miss that car.

I wish I still had a garage. I kinda want to build a 944 for autocross.

I'll probably end up with an NC miata tbh. Keep it stock+ so I can enjoy driving it and not have to worry about it.

I'm not sure this is a good idea mang. sometimes you need a kind of vaccum for the car to behave properly. also don't you have a sensor on the intake?
I vote for extending the intake for more cold air. Engine bay heat is no bueno.

Your car, your way tho.

Also, this is exciting.

How would you avoid the problem with water getting sucked in.

I knew Short Rams weren't the most healthy choice for a vehicle since 2013 (I was researching then) but then I thought heat shields would prevent some heat transfer into the filter.

We'll see what happens

I was thinking lower in the engine bay. with a cutout below the headlight.~ Hole saw? You could shield the air to the filter. Air behind the bumper would be the source.
Fresh air + vaccum. ?

Heat soak is an issue, Subaru's suffer from it badly. I know you are rolling a Toyota, but you can still avoid heat soak. are your headers on the front side?
any cool air is a plus. i feel that a short intake will have you heat soaked.

Back in my RSX days, everyone went with a CAI vs. Short-ram. The short ram sat high in the engine bay while the CAI tucked in under the drivers side headlight. Normal rain and standard puddles were not issues as companies design for this type of driving. The biggest issue is what happened to me when driving at night in the rain and I ran into deep water thus sucking it into the engine and well...it was a costly mistake.

You don't need some special bag or anything, just a CAI from a reputable company. You can buy used even but make sure you know how to install it and get a new filter.

^This.

I think he is working with an odd car though. He will have to fabricate.

If you're not building a car for the drag strip, or to complete competitively in autocross, why worry about sucking water up in a CAI?
Just get a proper short ram one from a reputable company, the difference in gains is going to be minimal. It's better to have piece of mind for a daily driver
