Driving an old (2010) Maserati Gran Cabrio, that is showing it's age (various sensors dying recently). Thinking of getting a Alfa Romeo Giulia QV, which will probably be a nicer driver. But I think I'll miss the engine sound.

This is an image from Assetto Corsa, a 7 year old racing sim. Can't get over how good it looks with all the mods.

If you never spend more than 10k on a car?
You will always have comfort and spending money.

Those high interest rate loans just smell bad.
Why would you tie up years of income in a car?

IMHO 1 years worth of income should be the limit, spread over a 4-5 years. A car you can afford, that still has some charisma.

Still, people living beyond their means to look rich puzzle me.
I would think that owning house, owning car. beats a life of debt.
You can always improve a house, freshen up, customize, or upgrade a car.
And still be free of debt. Living a good life.

That's funny as all we've talked about is the 0% and low interest loans so readily available.

I mentioned to it seems crazy to me to spend 20% of your income on a car, but he just said spending a year's salary on a car spread out over 4-5 years is reasonable. That's 20-25% of one's salary every year.

Weren’t you trying to impress other parents in a parking lot last week?

Damn, one year's worth of income That's insane!

If you make $25k a year you should not own a $25k car.

If you make $350k a year, you should not own a $350k car either.

don't really have a rule, but I run low leverage, call that immigrant anxiety? I have a mortgage, but always have enough cash/asset to pay it 100% off tomorrow with some spare liquidity. Same thing with car, only got the loan to get financing incentive on msrp, paid it off 3 month later...

If you're just going to sit in the cash, you might as well just pay everything off. You really are sitting in enough cash to pay off your mortgage?

It's individual choice. A house on my block sold for 5x yearly income. (renovated)
But out of town a house in the stix can be had for a year's income.
It comes down to impressing others vs satisfaction.

I absolutely love my QV. Best car I have ever owned as far as balance between driving dynamics, practicality, power and uniqueness. I made mine so that it it always has the exhaust flaps open and it sounds beautiful (takes 30 min to do). I get loaner Maseratis when I bring it in for service and I'm always happy to get back in my car.

I added a video of the cold start with flaps open (before I blacked out my grille).

1. The person who bought it might make more than you, so not 5x to the person buying it.
2. The reason a renovated house in the city is purchased over a crappy rural house is purchased is not necessarily to impress people.

It also comes down to what your yearly income is.
