Talk to me. The g/f has about 75k on her odometer right now and she has a slushbox

Just really not sure what Mrs. Piob is getting. We hit the current early reel in on her ML (3 months currently) but they just will not come to the numbers I want. I can get an RRS for just a few $$ more a month, and let's face it, an RRS trumps an ML. Mrs. Piob likes the cheap, cheap numbers on the FX AWD. I like the tech but I'm just not sure about Infiniti.

    Get the RRS.

    Give your wife your GL.

    Drive the RRS.

She thinks the GL is too big. I would drive the RRS on weekends to keep miles off the GL.

Is she even remotely interested in the RRS? Cause the RRS is pretty big, too.

No, the wheelbase is medium sized. You must be thinking of the RR.

Use the BMW fluid. Don't use any other fluid even though the BMW fluid is $$$. The fluid and filter should be changed every 60k miles. (30k for manuals if anyone's wondering.)

You can still change it after 100k, but the transmission has adapted to the old fluid by that point --- it's worn in place --- and there is a good chance that there will be slippage or the gear changes will be unreliable if you change the fluid out after 100k.

    Are you sure about this?

I'm asking because I know my e39 was well taken care of by the previous owner's son (a mechanic), but I have no idea about how far did he take care of it and what I should do first. I know that everything is stock except the fuel flow sensor/meter, the water pump and anything suspension was never changed (might do a full cooling system replacement this year just to be sure, car has 141k km/87k miles).

Deadline is in a couple of months when the lease runs out. Also, they don't tend to put great lease deals on cars their first couple of model years.

The old school maintenance thing zippyh pointed to is a good thing to use if you're going to keep the E39 longer. At 87k miles, the car's about to have a bunch of issues that should be taken care of. Belts and spark plugs are two that come to mind. Is it the 6-cylinder or the 8?

In the meantime, I have some man-made maintenance issues as it looked like someone grabbed my driver's side mirror on the E46 and broke it off --- there are finger streaks on the mirror. I just ordered a replacement housing and mirror for a really good price. If you're in the US, PM me for information on the parts place I used.

I'd be careful. I did a flush with BMW fluid on a family member's 70k auto transmission and three months later I had to do a full rebuild on it to the tune of about $5k. BMW must go to the ends of the earth to find the most brittle auto transmissions possible.
