I just priced a 2013 dressed like my 2012 on the Canadian Mercedes site. Was 90k CAD. Is there still a 15% (GST + PST) on cars? And then there was a "gas guzzler" tax, which back in 1990, I remember was 3k on a Jeep Cherokee. Somewhere between 100-110k dressed well.

    It's a shame because I think you'd like it.

we got rid of GST and PST and now have a 13% "harmonized sales tax". there is also freight and PDI, iirc. I do not know of a gas guzzler tax, although I am familiar with the term (keep in mind, I did not handle any of the paperwork on our cars so there may be one).

I'm sure I'd love it, even though I'm not a fan of MB interiors. It's actually my favorite SUV (design-wise) and a GL63 would be on my instakop list if I came into some money. Just a little out of my price range right now

Speaking of this I really miss my e34. I am looking for a new car in the next few month when I am employed again and was thinking about another E34 but with gas prices today I think I should just forget it, because I also want performance or at least fun, but 535 or 540s they feel like there's a hole in the tank and you haven't floored the pedal yet...

I don't really like E36 so much but I was thinking I would like a 318is from this era. Same performance as E30 but more comfortable and spacious (I prefer the design of the E30 by far though), better fuel consumption than 6cyl and better performance unless you go for a 325...

    Something like this

In the UK petrol is £6.59 per gallon. That balances out to $10.69 as of this morning. FML.

A quick search shows than an E34 takes roughly 20 Gallons. That means a tank of fuel costs about $213 fuck...

In Germany you're lucky if you find 1.65€ per liter, which is $8 per gallon.

Yeah E34's have fairly large tanks. I had one when gas was only $1.50 a gallon in the US (thanks, world peace) and a normal fill up was still cresting $50 or more. It would be a nightmare at $10 a gallon (which gas costs where I live now too) - but seeing people drive around here in 10mpg cars is common though- can't say I know how it feels to spend a $1/mile on gas costs just yet.

187, what is gas in GTA now? I can remember it being around $4.00 a gallon back in 1990.

around 1.25-1.30/L (will get back to you with conversions in a sec). but premium is much higher, around 1.45-1.55/L.

edit: we are currently at ~ 6/gallon. Last summer regular was around 140-150 and premium was almost 1.80. What is gas like down south? iirc, a lot of border towns drive over to fill up. This concept has always had me dumbfounded

Oh yeah, even back in the early 90s the cross border tank up was huge. The Ambassador Bridge had/has huge filling stations just for that. Used to be under a buck to cross, and the traffic was usually light, and you could save $50 on a fill up. I mean, it was $4 in Windsor and $1 in Detroit. Also, stop at the duty free and snag a bottle for $8 that would cost you $45 at the LCBO. Don't forget though exchange favoured the US dollar by 30-40% at the time so that did eat into the savings some.

It is honestly absurd to tell someone to buy a GL550 (@ approx 100k) but to avoid a used BMW 7 series because you might get hit with some crazy repair bills. You would need to blow the engine and transmission and have a raccoon nesting in your backseats in the 7 series to have repair bills that would come anywhere near the amount of depreciation you will face from the GL. Also, what is so great about the GL? Pretty sure in 10 years when we look back at cars from this era, we won't swoon over the GL (nor would we for the 7 series), but I think it's being made out to be a much better car than it actually is.

damn, I guess it does make sense to do it. My thought was always that they'd waste so much in gas by going into a nearby city or town that any benefit would be insignificant. It makes more sense if the US plays ball and puts up stations directly at the border
