Dropped off the i3 at the body shop this morning. Rental car is a VW Taos. It's fine, I guess. Has wireless CarPlay and it's pretty quiet. The downshifting while braking is a bit obtrusive, though, and the stop/start seems to restart the engine if I ease the pressure on the brake pedal, even if the pedal is still unambiguously pressed.

I hate automatics.

I absolutely am. But life is complicated and my SO would at least need to have the option of driving it and manuals not so much. I was tempted a little bit because I have been driving my two manual cars a lot so I did go sit in a TLX Type S but was underwhelmed a bit on the materials and finish. Your comment about the 300C made me not bother trying to test drive one so thanks for saving me some bother. I'm stretched so thin I don't have time for bother.

Ultimately my choice so thanks for the comments. Base model though; it gives me an analog dash which I like so much, and driving it was pretty great. Should have it next week, looking forward to it. On paper the rear legroom is roughly the same as the G70 but sitting in it and taking photos of my knees and seat clearance after adjusting the front seat for me, there is a real improvement in rear legroom between the G70 and the S5.

Thanks again for the comments and help.

Pics when you get it?

And some details? Color? Options?

Thoughts on the [now ubiquitous] 48V mild hybrid systems? My 2021 car does not have that system but the next gen Audi S models will have it. Same for the M340i.

I may be way off but the added complexity doesn't seem worth it to me. May not be an issue now but I remember when Audi had issues supplying parts for the 48V systems a couple of years ago. Owners without their vehicles for months waiting for replacement parts.

My wife's XC90 has the mild hybrid. MPG is significantly better. The one tangible benefit is that it makes the auto stop-start almost undetectable, where the auto stop-start in my car takes a half second or so which is why I turn it off. You can't disable it in the Volvo.

The quantitative approach to deciding this is to look at the premium for the hybrid function, figure out how much you’ll save on gas, and project how long you’ll keep the car. I read an article earlier this year (maybe Jalopnik?) which suggested that recouping the extra cost from fuel savings takes quite a while.

I can only comment as a renter that does not have to worry about maintenance. I think the BMW systems in particular are pretty great when deployed on regular cars. They deliver an astonishing amount of power and fuel economy in long highway driving. You drive them like a regular car, they have ample passing power…and you have to fill up half as much (maybe not literally half, but i think i was able to get 500 miles on a 7-series tank)

Rented that Jag SUV on vacation last week. Handles well, feels solid, engine/transmission were dogs.

Ordered five off-road tires for the landcruiser. Only 4 got delivered. Called the package service:

Them: Yeah, the system says it’s still in the warehouse. But we can’t find it.

Me: How on earth do you lose a 265/70r17 tire?

Them: Huh? Let me check. You’re right, that’s a large and heavy package. Let me call them as this is weird.

Them: Yeah, I called them. They really can’t find it. Wait 20 days and we will refund it.

Me: WTF. It’s not like it makes sense to steal it either. These are dynapro MTs, really only suitable for off-roading.

Them: I’m really not sure what to say

Me: ……..
