The G-Wagon is great and so are EV Suvs but this doesn’t appeal to me at all. It's an identity problem like the Mustang EV crossover.

Finally got a chance to watch this. They pulled it off more smoothly than most Tesla events but it all felt a little too corporate. The Rivian R2/R3 event had a real "little guy" start up feel. Too bad they are struggling and might need to sell out before either vehicle hits the streets.

Volkswagen is desperate enough that I could see them buying Rivian.

I could see that too, but they would likely merge the brand with Scout. It wouldn’t take much to change the badging and some slight design tweaks to make it work.

Scout is a legacy brand in the US. So marketing would lean into that.

Certainly possible. I think it would depend on which brand has more equity at the time. I could see Rivian having greater upside given how old Scout is and how long it was dormant. Unlike Mini when BMW took over, it simply didn’t exist so it wasn’t gaining new adherents outside of its niche.

I just can’t see them buying Rivian and keeping both brand names. “Retro” is still a strong selling point with consumers. So I’d guess that’s the direction for them.

With some design tweaks the R3 would make a cool smaller Scout for buyers.

Yeah, I am far from certain. I just doubt the actual cachet of the Scout brand. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It’s a brand that has a cult following. Well done marketing could expand that to a larger audience.

Again, ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ You may be absolutely right. I certainly can’t empathize with (and don’t understand) the American truck/SUV obsession, so my perception is likely off.

The guys who like older Broncos and K5s also hold Scout in high regard. Lots of restorations of them these days.

I was out and about yesterday with my gf and I saw an amazing looking AM DB11. The V-8 sounds awesome but one huge drawback with the car was it had horrible brake squealing. The squeals just kills the coolness of the AM.

I had a similar problem with my C63S AMG where I couldn't get the brakes to stop squealing. As much as I liked the car, I just couldn't deal with it anymore and was one of the reasons why I ultimately sold the car.

Good speculation video.

@UnFacconable

The Scout brand is interesting to me but the Traveler seems crazy. I've read that it's 91 inches wide which is a good foot wider than most full size SUVs - ain't no way I'm buying something that much wider than a Tahoe.

On the one hand, the range extender would give me solid protection against having to charge on my frequent 200 mile drive to the mountains but I'm not sure I want to take on ICE subsystem which will still need oil changes, oxygen sensors, and smog checks, etc. I think with 300 miles of EV-only range, I would pretty much be good to go and I love the simplicity of an all electric car.

The body on frame nature is kind of cool but I'm not sure there is a real payoff here. The thing is probably pushing 4 tons. That video suggests 180kwh battery which is nuts. The price of course is interesting but EVs have never come out at the prices promised (Rivian did honor the initial pricing for early reservation holders and it cost them dearly) but perhaps with the massive increase in supply we are seeing worldwide, there will be some price reduction from battery production to make that pricing possible.

EDIT: Front bench option is awesome. I wish more EVs did that. They don't need center consoles and don't have transmission tunnels, so 3 across is totally doable in a pinch. It may not be that great for long drives but sitting in the way back for long drives is even worse. Gimme 6 seats across 2 rows with more storage (my Jeep has captain's chairs in the middle row so it only holds 6 across 3 rows).
