I haven't been around a lot lately but I remember that this forum had many people who were not knowledgeable about cars, but one or two who were pretty impressive in their knowledge.

So...imagine you have precisely $62k to spend on a car, all in. Assume that it needs to be 4-door, and that the things you prioritize are good handling/sportiness/power, rear legroom, and the interior being a nice place to be. Legroom not for kids, but for the occasional adults. I guess those are largely divergent thoughts. I used to like BMWs, but I do not love all the crazy tech which takes away from the driving experience. I don't want to talk to my car. Like Clarkson said, road, seat, ass.

I have been thinking G70, TLX, A5 Sportback, and shockingly enough, one of the 2023 Chrysler 300C's with the 5.7L V8. I was thinking a base M340i, 5-series, or X3, but I drove them all and they suck. The full-dash screen sucks. The 2024 X3s don't have the full-dash screen but they are just uninspiring. Right now the Genesis is leading because the A5 is a little underpowered. I don't know what to think about the Chrysler and if it will carve up the twisties that make up a third of my commute with the alacrity I expect (in rain and snow). But the rear legroom is great in that car.

What do you think? Am I missing any car?

Lexus ES350 or IS500 if you don’t need as much leg room. IS500 one of the last V8’s that’s still NA.

I have a G70 and I really like it. Its a lovely place to be, drives better than the rest of its class save the 3 series, is a nicer interior than all but the C300. There is however, no rear seat legroom. And the trunk is surprisingly small.

Are you willing to drive a manual transmission? If so, the Integra Type S sounds perfect for you.

The only car on your list i would hate to see you in is the 300C or any of the Mopar cousins (Challenger, Charger, and the departed Magnum) They are crude, cheap, pigs. sorry if i offend any owners, but this is my honest experience.

They also happen to be some of the most stolen cars.

There might be a bit of selection bias, like where those cars get parked vs others.

S5 Sportback. Should be able to hit your price point, and solves the underpowered issue of the A5.

I haven't driven the Genesis or Chrysler but the BMW and Audi are solid choices IMO. My FIL drives a couple year old Acura TLX. Most boring car ever. I did have two nice BMW experiences in the last week.

One of my daughter's friends got dropped off the other day and I was out front cleaning my car (current gen S4). Fellow Dad drives a year old M340i AWD.

We got to chatting and took it for a quick spin. Wow!! While the S4/S5 and M340i are closely matched in terms of price and stats, the BMW feels much quicker and steering feels miles better than the Audi. Interior quality feels about the same but the sports exhaust in the S4 sounds better. Not sure if his had the valved sports exhaust or not.

The only downside to the BMW I could find was his didn't have adaptive suspension and it felt too stiff for every day. Daily driving in new england, I keep it mine in Comfort. Without the ability to soften things, the BMW would probably bother me over time.

I think that adaptive suspension is standard in MY 24+ so it's a non issue now. I was really impressed. It's absolutely at the top of my list when it comes time to replace the Audi.

I also drove a 2023 M3 comp AWD recently. Took my elderly FIL to get his Acura serviced and the BMW dealer next door had this front and center. In Tanzanite Blue, that front end didn't bother me a bit. With the front plate, it kind of obscures that big grill.

Not that I need 500hp for a daily but I will admit to thinking, "I could make this work." Surprisingly (to me) they don't CPO the virtually new M3 (or RS5). Sales person said it would add $5K to the price which they couldn't recoup. She also pointed out that CPO for Audi and BMW is now just one year!! When did that happen? Just two years ago Audi CPO added two additional years or 50K mi to the standard 4 year/50K.

For me the M340i AWD is the sensible but fun choice. Inventory is plentiful and dealers are negotiating. When I had to buy in summer '22 it was an awful time. Also, car dealers are still the worst. I made it 100% clear after driving the M3 that it was not a suitable daily for me. No need to talk numbers, thank you for your time. They gave the full court press. Had to use my FIL as our excuse to leave. I gave them my throwaway email and they still found my cell number and have been blowing it up.

My friend has an i4 with the adaptive sporty suspension. Still too flinty for driving around town. I'm pretty certain I would never choose a sport suspension for any car I did not plan to put on a track.

Given that it's Alonso, we can't rule out the possibility that he sabotaged the car to embarrass Stroll, expressing his displeasure at the current plight of the F1 team. :)
