Any thought to importing a US car? It’s supposedly easy

After exchange and even before import taxes/duties, US cars are already about 15% more expensive than Canadian cars. As an example, the average price of an .1RS is $190k USD which works out to $250k CAD. Factor in another 15% or so to import car. By contrast, the RS I was supposed to pick up this week was priced around $215k ($165k USD). On the higher end, there was a delivery mile car with ceramics that was listed for $245k CAD. South of the border, the same car would have an asking price of $220k USD.

The annoying thing is I earn all of my income in USD so I'd have no issues buying a US car, but it's just not feasible after you factor in the cost of importing it.

And the ultra annoying thing of trying to buy a used RS is trying to find out how many hard track miles the car has. All of the cars I've looked at have turned out to be duds. Virgins are few and far between, and after buying a bottom-of-the-market GT3, I learned a valuable lesson in buying the best example you can afford. Wont make that mistake again.

Seriously, you can get an RS for $165k US? Well I take it back, then...I’d gladly live with undesirable options for that price.

Track miles are more than fine for that car if the owner maintained it fastidiously. And the cars are PDK so no chance of overrevs, although I’m sure you’ll want a DME report anyway

Even cheaper in some cases. A 13,000 mile UV car sold for $205k/$155k recently (mostly track miles).

991.1 prices (both RS and non-RS) have all taken a hit with the new cars.

The RS market in the US is a lot different, because dealers sold the majority of these cars for way over sticker (in Canada you can't sell a new car for over sticker). The result is a lot of owners being into their cars for $X over sticker and therefore having an unrealistic idea of what their car is worth today. The 2 people I know who've recently sold their '16 RS in the US both had a ***** of a time moving their cars.

Anyway, enough value talk. When do the wheels go on and the exhaust installed?

I’m sure that all plays a role, but secondary prices paid for 991.2 GT3 and RS remain high. Desirability of the older cars has definitely been negatively impacted.

Wheels and exhaust go on over the next day or two. Expected completion tomorrow or Thursday. Then off to PPF.
