Thought I'd give it a shot, anyone work in this area? I've just finished my masters and finding it very difficult to get my first job. I have four years of business administration-type experience. I have a job in real estate at the moment which is paying the bills until I can get into the field.

I'm thinking if I don't get into anything by the end of the year I might go traveling and volunteer for an NGO, most likely in South East Asia. I've been looking for a wide variety of work, my undergraduate was in Literature (my masters in Development Practice). Mostly been looking at community engagement work, project development etc. Any suggestions or tips? (Not sure if anyone will be in the 'industry' but I thought it's worth a shot). Cheers :)

Nice! Sorry for the late reply. I am located in Australia, thinking of relocating shortly to Hanoi, seems easier to get work at my level if I'm already in the country.

@lukejackson

My info is a bit out of date, but I'm happy to chat if we catch up for a chat sometime in the coming weeks.

In short, it's not easy and most fairly entry-level positions involve poor pay relative to qualifications and experience. If you are really keen, then spending a stint volunteering is a good way to gain connections. I know a few people who participated in the Australian Youth Ambassadors for Development (AYAD) program, which is now called Australian Volunteers for International Development (AVID) - have you looked into applying for a placement on that program?

Otherwise, it's really just a matter of keeping an ear to the ground and looking out for opportunities and networking furiously. There used to be a really good Australian website that collated international development jobs, but I lost the bookmark quite a while back. Of course, with the current govt getting rid of AusAID and gutting the international development budget, things aren't looking so good at present.
