How much difference is there between 4-ply and 6-ply lambswool? Im looking for a new lambswool shawl collar cardigan, and I'm trying to decide between the Campbell's of Beauly (4-ply) and the Drake's (which I believe is 6-ply). And advice on the differences between the two would be helpful. TIA!

You won't really know until you have both in hand. Sorry.

Ply just means twists of something, whatever it is. I've seen modern 3-ply cashmere sweater being thin and flimsy compared to 2-ply from an older vintage. The knit and gauge also matter greatly to the final product

I was afraid of this answer. Thanks though!

Similar question here… If I multiply ply times gauge, dies that get me the number of strands per inch? It seems like that would be a way to compare the density of different garments.

here you are getting into what is called *yarn count* and it is really a byzantine affair . there are competing standards and it's fiber specific . best left to product wonks .

Dunno if the same applies in knitwear but in carpet, a 10th gauge construction is 10x10 or 100 stitches per inch.

If you’re still interested in this one, I can try to answer shortly. I own two Drakes lambswool shawl which are excellent, among the best knitwear items I’ve bought, and I just bought a Donegal shawl from Campbell’s so will be able to do a comparison for you once it arrives.

To complete the thread - the Campbell’s arrived today. Wrong size sent unfortunately so can’t do a fit comparison. The cardigan seems to be of good quality but I would say the Drake’s by contrast seems to be notably thicker and more luxurious of feel. So I’d say both are worth a place in my wardrobe but I feel like I did get something for the additional cost of the Drake’s.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
