Car Service in Italy

Heading over to Italy on a buying trip for a new business venture. Will be starting out in the north near Milan, and leaving from the southeast, in Bari. Basically, I'm looking for a car service that can take me from place to place, i.e., to and from various hotels and businesses I will be visiting.

The problem is that I don't want anything fancy and am on a very limited budget, so the whole limo-type thing is not what I'm looking for, just more like a cab service that can be booked for several hours a day. If anyone has experience w/this sort of thing and can give me some ideas, it would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Why not just rent a car? Sounds like a great opportunity to discover another country.

Worried about directions and such -- is it easy enough to figure out GPS and road signs in Italy?

In some of the cities they are tricky though, you can only drive down certain streets at certain times, no?

Anyway, we hired a van driver, it was kind of pricy, maybe 500-600 euros (or maybe dollars..forget) per day but that was driving everywhere across the country, gas split 6 ways, and some tours of interest. Overall when it was split up it was cheaper than a tour on a bus though I think. Probably no way we would have been able to navigate the more traditional cities...the highways weren't really a problem.

edit: just checked, it was 500 euro per day or so.

That's certainly true, so set out extra time to make it to your destination, but it's not impossible to navigate.

Yeah and the tricky thing is there's really no indication. there are cameras that take pictures of your car or something. also need to get one of the fast passes for the highway (autostrade) as there are toll booths everywhere (I think you can pay each time too). navigation is pretty simple and its not too difficult to drive though.

In most bigger cities cars are not allowed in the city centre, and there are cameras placed to make sure you don't enter it. Look for ZTL (Zona Traffico Limitato -- Limited Traffic Area) or something similar and steer clear. There is usually a small rectangular sign that warns that only authorized people may drive that way.

As for highways, you need to pay each time you get out (cards or cash) -- opposed to other countries in which you need to buy a ticket beforehand but are free to drive everywhere for some days. Directions are very clear here.

Beware the speed limits: they're really annoying and automated.

As for car servicing, I wouldn't know which way to turn -- also, I'm afraid it would turn out extremely expensive.
