Cant we cut any fabric and use it as a cravat / tie?

I've recently gotten interested in wearing a cravat as a tie is not always suitable in casual settings. It also works well to offset my long neck.

It appears that they are usually about 6" wide and often 45" long. I've wondered why I can't have fabric cut to those lengths and used as a cravat. As I see it, it will be tucked in so the finish isn't visible. If necessar I could have some simple stitching done, but I wanted to see what people thought were the obvious advantages to buying an ascot vs buying a silk fabric of similar cut.

Thank you!

There is a school of thought that holds that a simple scarf along the lines you propose and worn ascot-style is more elegant than the typical bladed ascot, which I have seen likened (unfairly, I think) to the pre-tied bowtie.

In point of fact, Brooks Brothers currently has on their website "cravats" that look just about identical to what you propose. Not cheap, though. They list at $115.

I reckon it's a good idea. You can get some beautiful fabrics and it tends to make your choice a whole lot greater. And why pay a small fortune for a branded piece of swish fabric when one without comes at a mere snip in comparison?

Given my addiction to ties, my wife - who's a bit of a dab hand with a needle and thread - suggested we do a similar thing to what you suggest.

She's since started fashioning them into some rather impressive ties. Bless her.

Hmmm. I've previously thought of doing something like this myself. I may have to look into this!
