So over in my cheapest tailor thread I mentioned that I am going to get him to copy a Canali I saw in British GQ

Opinions on it:

Button stance is really high, but I think I like it. Love the high gorge, love the lapel roll, neutral on the cloth (but hard to really make much of it from that pic anyhow)

Thoughts?

IMO, part of what makes this suit appealing is the fabric. It wouldn't look the same in a more standard English cloth. So make sure to get yourself sheen-y, fancy striped, Italian super cloth.

Looks pretty good. A few thoughts:

  • You might want to find a clearer picture, if possible. It's not the easiest to see.

  • I think the gorge is almost too high - it looks like it's above the top of the sleeve head. I'd drop it a little bit.

  • The trousers look a little flared, rather than straight. Could just be the lighting, or the way he's standing.

  • I'm not a fan of the fabric. It just looks too "designer-y". Not sure what that means, maybe it's just that "designer" labels are selling shiny suits lately. I think the fabric puts the suit almost over the top. The cut is very attention grabbing, and a plain fabric would look stunning, I think. How much do you need a striped suit? Maybe go with a crazy check or windowpane.

And last but not least: do it, man. What was this going to cost you? About thirty dollars and a ham sandwich?

hmm.....interesting....one vote for the fabric, one vote against.

Im neutral on it, which doesnt help, but I may just be a slave to availability instead.

And since I want to do this as cheaply as humanly possible (since it is only a test run), well then maybe I will just use the cheapest stuff I can find with a decent hand.

I should be able to find something around $10 a meter (Chinese to be sure) but that feels ok and drapes ok, and make it up in this shape. If he does well, then ill march back in there with something nicer.

I like the very high gorge that chorse doesnt approve of.

The jacket also looks slightly shorter than normal - or is that more just the angle of the photo?

The flared pants - admit I hadnt spotted, thanks. Will tell him to ignore that and make a more normal leg.

Not much chance of another picture, its an ad from British GQ from Sept last year. I cant very well call Canali and say "hi its Matt, can you emails me more pics of that one, I have a forty buck guy I want to use to make knock offs"

Looks great. I like the ever so-slight slight flare on the leg as well as the microstripe cloth. The button stance is a bit high, I'd bump it down a hair. Otherwise, have fun and dont forget to post pics of the results.

I, too, like the gorge and lapel roll, but it's a bit too trim-cut for my taste.

Nice suit - I think I have seen this one in the Canali store on London's Bond Street.
