Can you wear overcoats without a suit?

I had a girlfriend who came up to my office one night....

She had on an overcoat...

With...

A garter belt, stockings and pumps on.. and nothing else.

Worked for me.

I feel strange in my topcoat with just a t-shirt on...so there are limits.

If you are dress shirtted or sweatered out, it is definately a go. Scarves are helpful because the front of an overcoat can leave a lot to be desired around the neckline when you just have a thin cotton shirt on.

You may also want to make sure it is altered in a little trimmer since usually you get them fitted with a jacket underneath.

Sure, especially if the coat is not too long (ie, not past the knees).

An excellent use of an overcoat.

Well, I live in the southern east coast, and I wear one every now and then, just with shirt, jeans and a scarf (an overcoat without a scarf is not complete, IMHO). I never wear it with a collarless shirt, but that's just because my coat is quite conservative (relatively wide lapels and black).

Yes. But it works best with topcoats or coats with a pattern, rather than something sobre (e.g. a charcoal or navy overcoat).

I think car coats or 3/4 length coats that are mid-thigh length work better with casual clothing. Below the knee coats with casuals give off too much of a trenchcoat mafia vibe to me....

I wear jeans or pants + sweater, etc with my overcoats all the time.

There are soo many classic looks grounded there. Turtleneck + jeans + nice boots + overcoat. Killer sunday afternoon combo.

My favorites to wear with jeans are a slim glen plaid and camel mid-thigh..
