Can you alter a field jacket?

I just bought a field jacket for winter which I love.

All my winter jackets have been M and they all fit quite well. Since I bought it online, I chose M but unfortunately, it is bigger than expected and fits more like a large (my true size is probably more between a S & and a M). I don't mind my winter jackets to be roomy but this is a bit much.

The store where I bought it only offer refunds and no exchanges. It means I would need to pay duties again on top of the back & fort shipping which would probably amount to 250$+.

Can a tailor do something about it?

Here is the jacket I bought for reference.

Thanks

Not to sound flip, but the best thing to do would be to take it to a tailor and ask what can be done.

Altering that jacket would likely be difficult. It has flat felled seams along the sides; both would need to be ripped out and re-sewn, possibly compromising the water repellency. It’s not the type of garment or fabric that tailors regularly work on. Can’t hurt to ask, but be careful of tailors who will say yes to anything, without actually knowing how to do it.

In my opinion you’re better off eating the extra shipping costs. You may be able to avoid paying double duty tax which is plainly unfair as you’re only left with one jacket at the end of the day. Ask the sellers or check with the shipper. Good luck.

Beyond shortening the sleeves, I don’t see how you could do it.

Try it on with a chunky sweater and see how it feels. Obviously it’s outerwear so it needs some room. If you’re still unhappy with it, yeah, just send it back and consider it a lesson learned with online buying.
