I'm new here... and I've been learning a lot looking through other threads. And I'm realizing my one sportcoat, an Alfani from Macy's, doesn't really fit like it should. I have some ideas about what is wrong... anyone care to check my thinking? (Note: I'm not concerned with the jeans or the shoes here) The shoulders seem okay. Perhaps slightly wide, but not worth altering. The chest seems slightly too large, maybe reduce that by 1"? The waist is too large. Take that in by 2"? The overall length seems too much... maybe take off 1.5"? The sleeves are perhaps a half inch too long? That at least should be a cheap alteration. Am I missing anything? I'm not sure why the back is wrinkling up. It isn't always there.

I think all of these alterations are too much $$ to put into an Alfani sportcoat. My tailor would probably charge ~$100 for all that you've listed (take up arms, take in chest, take in waist, shorten jacket) and it wouldn't seem like it's worth it. I think you would be better off putting that money into a blazer that is constructed better and fits better to begin with. Just my $0.02.

First off, let me disclaim that I am no a suit expert but have seen a few in my time to make some general comments:

It clearly looks like a rather old, maybe cheap suit. It's definately a size too big for you, and overall just doesn't do anything for you. I looks big and baggy. I suppose you could take it to a tailor and adjust it all over but my opinion is...

Unless you desperately need it right now, or it's a very good expensive piece worth putting money into to save, or you're very strapped for cash taht you can't go out and get another one (assuming it's even needed)... my first advice (coming from experience) is don't throw good money after bad. With the amount of tailoring required, it'll end up being a lot of money and n the end unless you have a very good tailor, it'll probably end up being a frankenstein hodged-podged up jacket. Go to H&M, spend 50-80 bucks on a sports coat that fits or something.

just my $0.02

sleeves look fine. waist looks like it needs suppression. Also, the slightly baggy jeans and clunky shoes make the overall fit look boxy. coat is too long, thats a risky alteration cause if the distance from the pockets to the end of the coat changes too dramatically, it'll just look bad. shoulders seem a tad big, same with chest, both very expensive alterations.

that jacket is a lost cause.

save the money you would have put toward alterations and look for a decent sport coat that fits you. H&M and Zara are good options.

Good call. Get a good idea of your measurements, go to stores to try on different jackets, and scour eBay and the Buying and Selling forum for a jacket that fits you. You won't regret it!

Absolutely not. It isn't even a sportcoat, it is an orphaned suit jacket. It is too long in the skirt and too wide in the shoulders. I'd say it is two sizes too large at the least. Save the $50-$100 in alterations and donate it to charity for the tax writeoff then use that $100 at H&M for a sportcoat as someone suggested. Since you aren't used to wearing anything that fits, get whatever feels just barely too tight, and that is probably your correct size.
