Can someone identify this hat?

Can someone identify this hat for me?

I'm unsure as to where this picture was taken (my guess is Los Alamos), but I certainly like the look of the man in the suit (who, I think, is Dr. J. Robert Oppenheimer).

I think it is a fedora, but I know almost nothing about hats.

Thanks.

That's a Fedora. From the look of the wide brim and wide ribbon, it would date from the 1940's or so.

Thank you very much.

I'd imagine that that picture was taken around the last days of WW2, so you are probably right about the date, as well.

And incidentally, I landed on Styleforum because I'd landed on The Fedora Lounge while searching for something, and folks had recommended SF for clothing related queries.

Now, back to my hat, I wonder if I can get hold of something like that.

You could hunt in antique shops and ebay for a fedora. They used to be plentiful and cheap, but from what I've heard, the vintage ones go for a lot of of money these days... I hear $75-200 for a nice one.

All the modern hats I've seen in men's clothing stores do not look like the old ones from the 1930's-1950's.

Optimo hats in Chicago www.optimohats.com makes incredibly high-quality fedoras, easily as nice as the old ones. I had one made and I love it! They could make you one identical to the one in the picture. Their hats cost about $500, though.

Interesting - I am in Chicago right at this moment, so perhaps I will pay them a visit sometime this week.

Incidentally, I'm from Cincinnati, and there is a really good hat shop there, as well, called Batsakes. Perhaps I'll go talk to both and see if I can get something!
