Debate: Should a 49-year old guy wear jeans for walking around town with loafers/mocs? If so, what brand, cut, etc?

i see no reason why not.

my 57 year old father just bought himself some 7 For All Mankind jeans on clearance at Filene's Basement. Hilarious.

You should steal them and burn them as a father's day gift.

There's absolutely no reason why not. It would surprise me if you don't see countless men of that age wearing jeans on a daily basis. Jeans are for everyone.
That said, I think older guys should avoid anything with ornate stitching or branding.

Why not? Preferably nothing too extreme, but it depends on his body type obviously. Most likely something in a classic cut in raw or rinsed denim is going to look the best overall.

Probably something fairly simply styled and neither too loose nor overly slim at that age. I would say that something like Rag&Bone or APC would probably look good. Not a fan of mocs or loafers though. Why not a pair of chukkas?

A friend of mine's father just got himself a pair of Nudie Slim Jim. The guy is 53 year old and quite fit (he is an accomplished long distance runner).
It all started with him mocking his son for buying $100+ jeans. His wife then persuaded him to try them on and he ended by asking his son to order him a pair

He doesn't look the least bit ridiculous in them, I have to say. His son picked him the Dry Confort one with the more discreet blue stitching.

Agree with all the above. There's no reason you shouldn't wear jeans when you're middle-aged. I'm 36 and have no intention of stopping - I wouldn't know what the hell else to wear. But like other parts of your wardrobe you are better off getting something classic and simple and that suits your body type. Maybe avoid the more overt back-pocket stitching (or avoid it all together). Get them hemmed if necessary. Match with a Paul Smith shirt - can't go wrong I reckon.

I believe that people should wear what they want, as long as it doesn't put them in a position to be ridiculed. I'm 42, and feel comfortable in the clothing discussed on this forum, and while I prefer the understated denim(R&B, 5EP, APC) ,I also have Nudies, orange stitching and all.

36 is middle aged? I am 32, and feel pretty young. I always thought that 40+ was middle aged... I had someone in their 50s in mind when I wrote my post... I think that a lot of it has to do with your level of physical fitness. Of course, I've seen more than one very gym toned Angeleno his 40s or 50s wearing Antiks or True Religions, looking pretty silly (of course, the outfit also often included an untucked, slim shirt with oversized collar and cuffs, man-jewelry, pointy boots, big buckle belt, and Eurofancy sunglasses.

IMHO this guy, immortalised by the Sartorialist, tends to demonstrate that you can rock selected "streetwear" items with panache well past the "middle age" zone.

I saw a guy in his late 60s or so wearing Nudies. Looked great and also didn't smack of "desparate attempt to look young"

I've never seen my father wear jeans. That doesn't mean you can't/shouldn't, but I think you have the amount of respect by now where you'd be better off wearing serious clothing. You mean business (unless you're on vacation).

I think it's all down to comfort. My father really never liked jeans, so he doesn't feel or look particularly comfortable in them. But if you feel comfortable, absolutely.
