Hi everyone,

I have to go to a wedding soon. I am 21 years old. This is what I picked. I have a burgundy suit (dark wine color) with bold pink shirt and pink and purple silk tie. I want to match with black shoes and belt as well as gold cufflinks Is this good?

Thanks.

Could you post some photos?
Nevermind. I just found out I cannot tie the top button on the shirt as it's too tight.

I decided to change for a white dinner/dress shirt instead. I can post some pics later.

I am going to try and tell you this without coming off too pretentious.

The wedding is not about you and as such any attention should be towards the bride and groom not you.

You choice of color in the suit, ties and shirt screams look at me. A gray, navy or charcoal suit would not only tone down the peacock appearance you would be displayed but also give you a better overall addition to your wardrobe for the future.

Do not draw attention away from the bride. Do not draw attention to yourself at a wedding. A burgundy suit, pink shirt, and pink/purple tie does both and should be avoided.

What about this?

The suit and shirt (tucked in) are fine although colors can be hard to judge in a photo. I suspect in bright sun that suit will stand out like raspberry ice cream—not necessarily a bad thing, as long as you have the confidence to rock it. And no, you will not outshine the bride—as if.

I would however choose a different tie—something darker and more formal, like a foulard, to bring down the brightness of the suit and suggest that beneath your devilish façade you are actually taking the event seriously.

Wear a white linen pocket square.

I like this tie tough. Do you think I would look bad if I used this one? Its much much brighter in real life.

I have a black slim tie too but no pocket square. My aim is to shine at the wedding actually haha :)

The suit color is nice though, reminds me very much to the wine waiters back in London

I take it that you do not own another color suit as far as Navy, Gray and or charcoal?

If not then I guess you have to do what you have to do. However, for the record the suit color is not appropriate for the occasion. Nor will the color serve you well down the line. This is something you might want to consider the next time you have the opportunity to shop for a new suit.

As far as it not putting too much attention on yourself rather than the wedding party? I believe you knew exactly what you were doing when you picked a wine color suit. I believe you just wanted validation from other style aficionados on this forum. However, you will not get me to co-sign your choice of suit for the stated occasion.

I am not trying to be a toxic member on this forum at all. But rather, trying to educate you on sartorial etiquette which may benefit you along your journey. Something I wished I had listened to when I first started my quest to becoming a better dresser. It would have saved me thousands of dollars.

I have a black suit too but I paid a lot more for this one so I am using it. I don't like grey suits at all so I am happy. I am 21 by the way.

Your first suit should have been navy. No one needs a black suit which (other than a tux) is only good for funerals—and you can get away with navy at a funeral because nobody owns black suits that aren’t tuxedos.

OK, your choice however, not really sure why your age was part of your response.

Anyway, like I stated previously you have the option to wear whatever suit you want. You posted a question and wanted feedback as such you were given. As far as owning a black suit and not wanting to wear it, that's fine as well though it would have been a better option for the occasion.

I understand you not liking a particular color ( Gray) as there are some colors that I like and dislike as well. Again, that is your prerogative and your money to spend how you see fit.

If your are asking "my" option then I would say the following:

Never by a Black suit unless you are a) part of the clergy, b) go to a lot of funerals c) you are required to wear one for a black tie event and do not own a tuxedo.

By what you told us it would seem that you own two suits. One that is Wine and the other that is black?

To me those choices were not the best choice and will limte your wardrobe. I say this not to give you grief on your selection. But rather, share my thoughts and experience.

I worked in men's high end fashion for several years. Which helped me during my sartorial journey. I have dressed recording artists, professional baseball, football basketball, and hockey athletes. Some were older than you while some were in your age group.

Additionally , I worked with many young and old business professionals during my time in the industry . All were very happy with my ability to outfit them in a way that presented the best option of themselves while catering to their needs and personalities.

I am not saying this as someone that knows it all as I do not. Each day I learn something new and try to use that knowledge to increase my understanding.

Have fun at the wedding and enjoy your time there.

I stated my age because at this time in life I rarely wear suits. I actually never had to wear a suit until now so I am not bothered. I can buy a suit anytime if I need to.
