Can I wear a striped, colorful Etro with a slate blue Zegna?

I am trying to spruce up a slate blue Zegna suit with a colorful shirt. I want to wear the ensemble to a business-related cocktail party.

I am thinking of wearing a bright, striped Etro shirt under a slate blue Zegna.

It's a striped shirt with multiple colors, including pink, dark lavender, a lime green and yellow. I think the shirt looks sporty by itself, but was wondering if it could be worn under a rather prosaic blue slate Zegna? I don't have a picture of either, unfortunately, but was wondering if anyone could comment on this idea.

My whole goal, is to go the party looking business-like, but sporty. I don't want to look like I just took off the tie and couldn't think of anything else to wear. The other people at the party are very urban, sophisticated, stylish.

If the Etro won't work, any advice on other approaches would be appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your help.

As a huge fan of etro - I wear a lot of their dress/sport shirts, suits, and ties...I love their product...(purchase price is slightly high versus quality I know....)

I always suggest wearing it in the manner you suggested it. The product more than any other is meant to be fun and whimsicle, sadly most people get those god awful robert graham billowly shirts to try to get this look.

What sort of fit is the suit? Is it more of a modern, trim fitting cut, or boxier? If the latter, would avoid it for the environment you're describing, but that's just me. What about a crisp white shirt and a grey wool tie? Or if you want to go tieless, I'd go with a solid lavender shirt. I don't think the combo you're describing is bad, but the look sounds a bit dated. Would have to see it though.

I think that might look great. I also have sort of slatey-blue Zegna suit and I pair it with interesting shirts all the time. It really does project a professional yet creative image -- or so I believe. (I was on the creative side with a big Manhattan ad agency and I used to wear this ensemble in that context for client events, parties, etc.)

Do it.
