Can I change a sport coat into a blazer by changing the buttons?

After doing some research, it seems that the only significant difference between a blazer and a sport coat is that a blazer has metal/brass buttons and a sport coat does not.

So can I change one into the other by simply changing the buttons?

A blazer is also navy in colour.

Okay, assume the coat is navy. Would all I have to do is change the buttons to change one into the other?

What exactly is your motivation for doing this?

Years ago I tried this. It looked good to me at the time, but I doubt I'd ever do it again. Suit fabric tends to be different from what is used for blazers. It can be done with success but for me I'd always know I'm wearing an orphaned suit jacket.

Sure. I now realize the op was referring to a sportcoat to begin with.

My understanding is that blazers are solid colors and sportcoats have designs, prints, etc.?

no. if that were true there would be no pinstriped suits and no plaid suits. the major difference is in fabric and color but with modern fashion it would seem that anything goes as a suit. even the wildest patterned and loudest jackets come wth matching pants and the customer decides weather to wear it as a suit or just as a blazer.
