Can a man 'outdress' himself (in terms of social class/status)?

For example, are loafers not appropriate for some men?

    Sport coats? Even khakis/chinos?

Can working-class/blue-collar men wear loafers? Non-college graduates?

Is it appropriate to dress in a particular way if you have no friends who dress as nicely?

Is it okay to wear loafers with jeans or casual pants for everyday where when you don't ever dress up further (suit, tie, for work or social occasions like weddings)?

Does any of this stuff matter?

Anybody have examples of men who have or do 'outdress' themselves?

Don't worry so much about whether you can wear loafers.

All men "out dress" themselves. We should all be naked in a jungle somewhere. [IMG]

I think judging people for anything (including their dress) for socioeconomic reasons is snobby.

    And?

I know what I like. I just worry about wearing shoes that are inappropriate for me somehow. I'm 26, clean cut, and I think loafers or otherwise nice shoes fit my personality, but I still wonder. I've been wearing Ecco Berlin slip on's for the past couple of years and now that I've become acclimated with nice shoes, I'm 'seeing through them - they look cheap and cheesy! I've been looking to upgrade for a while and I really like about 4 different pairs of Allen Edmonds and at least one pair of Bass Weejuns. I'm torn between the dark brown saddle AE Kenwoods and Dornochs for everyday wear and the AE Flagstaff and Sedona for summer with shorts or otherwise super casual use. The pair of Bass Weejuns I'm most drawn to is the Larson 2.

Not everything I said in my OP is true about me personally, but I was trying to illustrate scenarios.

I often whip peasants with a riding crop when I see them wearing loafers. The nerve! The gall!

There are worlds within worlds and games within games and minds within minds. Ignorance is bliss. Be careful of what you ask for as you might just get it. All will be revealed in time. For now young Stockton, enjoy thy loafers with even thy denim and ask not why. Welcome to Styleforum.

Honestly though, I think the OP is over-thinking it. If you want to wear loafers, just wear loafers and be happy.

Where do you find peasants in and around New York?
I am from NYC. Perhaps you meant to say "ethnics"

how about spending more money on clothes than they really should? all the time, especially younger people.

as for "dressing nicer than people of your social class should?" :fu:

    everyone should dress nicely.

How do you measure how much people "should" spend on clothes?

driving yourself into financial ruin should be avoided...other than that, figure it out for yourself.
