I have wool slacks that are certainly cooler than a pair of jeans or chinos.

Absoluetly yes. In fact I prefer super light weight wools to cottons in almost every but the most casual situations.

Yes indeed. I have a super light pair of tan open weave fresco wool pants that a very light and airy. Good for hot, humid summer days.

Seriously, I live in a tropical climate and I wear suits and trousers of about 9 oz or so and they are amazingly light and breezy. You wouldn't think wearing a wool suit in the Caribbean sun would be comfortable, but you would be surprised.

Yes, and here's why. Lightweight wool can be woven very thin and open, allowing for much breathability. Cotton this light is also quite cool but wrinkles badly and is prone to stretching. Consequently, most cotton clothing is much heavier.

Also, cotton absorbs perspiration, cutting down on air exchange. Wool absorbs very little perspiration. This is also why cotton must be washed far more frequently than wool.

A lightweight, quality wool pant looks better and is more comfortable than a heavy cotton pant. Linen also seems cooler and has its own characteric look. A fine, high quality cotton pant has an informal luxe look that is also part of a summer wardrobe.
