I jog on a treadmill or do stairmaster several times a week for like 30 minutes a session.

I enter my correct weight, and the machine keeps track of the total calories burned.
But is that approximately accurate? Is that calorie burned number the total calories I am burning that 30 minutes or is it on top of my basal metabolic calories i am burning during that session as well?

Also, after the stairmaster, how long do i keep burning calories at a relatively extended rate? Am I still burning the next few minutes to an hour due to the fact my body is still racing and cooling down?

Ignore the caloric expenditure estimates the machines give you, they're going to overestimate your expenditure by 20-40% in the best case. As for using the stairmaster, you're going to be burning more calories about as long as your heart rate is up. After your HR recovers, the effect it will have on your ckal burning is mostly negligable.

Heart rate is an inaccurate way to judge caloric expenditure.
