I wanted to start a thread that calls out companies for the trick of doing most of the manufacturing in China and then shipping it to Italy, France, UK, USA, etc to complete the manufacturing, like sewing on a tag, and calling the product "Made in @@@"

Anyone know what brands play this trick on their customers?

Prada. Their CEO gave a lecture to a trade show on the benefits of this system a few years ago.

I doubt many do so with Made in USA, as that doesn't carry the luxurious weight of something label Made in Italy or Made in France.

Doesn't garment have to say something along the line of Made in China, Finished in Italy, etc. As I have some garments with this sort of labeling.

How would you know...save for working at the factory? I'm sure it happens to varying degrees, but this thread is destined to veer into "My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who saw Ferris pass out at 31 Flavors last night" territory.

Unless, of course, The Truth makes a rare appearance to set us free...

Not true. Made in the USA carries quite a bit of weight in some circles. There was a republican campaign a few year back to quitely ammend the law to declare Macau, or some other tiny island off the coast of China as techically "American" so their goods could be stamped "Made in the USA."

What country did you buy the garment in? Every country has different labeling laws. Many countries give you the option to label it whatever country you want if it was produced at multiple stages in different countries. I've never heard of someone labelling it as "made in... finished in ..."

Do you mean the Northern Mariana Islands?

Gucci also does this (and Prada was mentioned above). Others that I BELIEVE do this are Givenchy (though some bags are just marked straight out "made in China"), Dior, Valentino Garavani (though he, too, has started marking things "made in Egypt" etc.), Armani, Gianfranco Ferre, etc. The other thing that some do, though, is use Chinese/immigrant low-wage (nearly slave wage) labor INSIDE Italy. They broke up a ring of such places a few years back.
