I'm thinking about buying the C&J Finsbury in suede or calf as a knock-around oxford -- wear with everything from wool pants to chinos, cords, and jeans -- probably primarily with casual pants and jeans.

Which hide would you suggest? Dark brown calf or dark brown suede?

Here are photos of the calf:

Here are photos of the suede (MAN, Barney's overprices C&J benchgrades...)

OR, should I go for the Alden for BB Plaza last shell cordovan brogues, with metal eyelets in color 8?

Any other suggestions would also be appreciated. Thank you.

For those purposes, I would probably get suede. You're not a 9.5 are you?

I could never quite grasp the concept of wearing calf oxfords with denim.
Aldens have an odd looking vamp which coupled with those el cheapo eyelets ruin the look.
So +1 to what Grim said: go with the suedes.

SUEDE!

Suede gives a vibe of casual, elegant style with jeans or a suit. You stand out from the crowd but in a subtle way.

If you do get them, stop at the shoe repair store and get a waterproof spray for suede and a wire brush. Those two things should keep them looking good.

Pocketsquareguy Speaketh the Truth.

Less Shiny = Less Formal

Jeans = Never, Ever Formal

I think suede also looks fantastic when wearing a suit without a tie.

I also think, that TaT would do well with suede.
