I hope this thread isn't too mundane for this forum, but my google searches led to quite a few results from here and I thought you guys might be able to offer me some advice :)

basically I've landed my first post-university job, and it requires me to wear a suit (& tie) every day to work. I would like to only buy a single suit for now, looking at the £250-300 ($350-450) price range. I was wondering about the following:

- what colour to make it so that it goes with as much stuff as possible? i've heard that a dark navy blue is a good colour if I'm only going to have one suit?
- what material? i've heard 100% wool is good, but wouldnt it get hot/uncomfortable in the warmer months?
- if anyone's familiar with shops in London (UK), what would be a good shop to look in?
- and finally, would black/brown formal shoes go well with a navy blue suit?

thanks in advance for any advice! :)

Presumably you gave up research when you graduated? There are many threads on this very subject which do not take much finding.

However, yes you want wool, forget any notion of mixed fibres and linen is not suitable for your use. Absolute nonsense to say it will be too warm.

Go to Marks and Spencer's, for a first suit they offer decent quality and have several testimonials. Yes it is a chain and the styling is generally (not entirely) classic. That is what you need for a first job - leave high fashion out of it, you may well be ill thought of as a result of selecting that.

Specification is more limited but in a modern open office environment, two back pockets in the trousers are useful if not essential - M and S does this in some of their ranges in which you budget enables you to look.

Thank you all for the solid advice, and sorry for not doing my homework on this forum properly before making the thread.

I hadn't thought of M&S and was infact thinking of Moss, but if M&S is okay with you stylish people then I'm sure my boss will be fine with it too! I hope to go on thursday and have a look at some.
