Buying and Selling on eBay: Tips, Tricks, Problems & Questions

vanity sizing is not the seller’s fault, not is it required to be measured. If a buyer doesn’t know his size ona given brand, he should not be buying them online.

I kind of disagree with this, as sizing varies even within brands. I wear a size S to XL(!) in my favorite brand. There’s zero way I’m able to buy anything without measurements. I imagine even with mega brands like Ralph Lauren et al, they use a zillion factories throughout the world. Things are going to come up different.

Plus, part of the joy of eBay is that you get to try out new brands for cheap.

I bought 2 pairs of NWB Nike sneakers last week on the bay, both pairs fitted like a UK7 instead of the marked size UK9, this is because they were actually factory seconds with various defects. Same can go for all “new” clothing if not checked by the seller.

Yeah, I would definitely be in the boat of providing measurements even if it's NWT and has a tagged size. Look at the variance between Polo sizing for some of their stuff. Larges fit like an XXL sometimes, and other times they're spot on. No rhyme or reason, and every brand is definitely different.

That sucks, still though, shoes are the one thing I hate providing measurements for just because the outsole measurements are such an unreliable guide to whether they’ll fit. They certainly would have helped you in this case, but I always worry about any sale where the buyer has asked for measurements. It’s one reason I hate bespoke shoes, and haven’t gotten around to relisting the one pair I have right now.

I've always assumed buyers wanted the outsole measurements to make sure the shoes would fit in their closet.

Church's UK sizing looks like this: I've sold a lot of pairs and include this chart in the listing photos, never had any returns.

I listed a random Sega Genesis game (Sol Deace) a few months ago that sold in under 2 minutes. I was listing a bunch of random stuff that was lying around and went with ebay's suggested price of $16. I looked it up and saw it regularly went for $50-100+.

I do provide measurements for most everything, but if a listing doesn’t provide measurements, and I don’t ask before buying, that’s on me (as a buyer).

Likewise. I just got tired of having to find/pull items to answer measurements questions. Also Figured if I was out of the office and couldn’t answer quickly I might lose the sale.

imo one of the magical things about secondary markets is that they transform what might otherwise be just a widget into something quite specific. good pics and a thorough description are a part of this magic.

Yeah, but like I said, it only takes a couple of seconds to provide the waist measurement. I mean, we aren't new to selling on Ebay, and we know the types of buyers on Ebay, and we also know how Ebay treats sellers vs buyers, so I try to avoid these kind of issues, instead of sticking to the "I'm right, I'm not required to provide that, and you're dishonest" stance.

Hopefully, that was not "clothesgamesmisc"'s first or initial response to the customer. It just reads terrible from a seller.

You really don't need as much of a CS angle when you're online within ebay if you have items that sell well enough (with the exception of issues that are of legitimate returns). If that's against the grain then my bad but the buyer did violate ebay policy by lying and committing return fraud. I personally block any buyer that I think might be a risk. Seems to work, 1500 feedback in the last 12 months with 2 negs and 0 revised.
