Buying a cashmere sweater?

I'm flying out in about a month to take graduate studies near Boston. People have told me that I will find a v-neck cashmere sweater (or two) indispensable.

What color should a fair-complexioned, Chinese-type Asian guy like me get, for something flexible but not boring? Are there particular styles and quality brackets? Particular brands or sources that are good?

I figured I'd end up grabbing something from Filene's or off eBay when I get there. Since I come from tropical Manila, I have absolutely zero experience (nor prior need) for sweaters and other cold weather clothing so assistance is appreciated.

J. Crew cashmere sweaters, when on sale, are a great deal.

Check out Lance's offerings at virtualclotheshorse. The Scott Hill private label sweaters are phenomenal.

Around or after Christmas, cashmere sweaters will be available on sale from most of the mall stores. I've had fairly good luck with Express, BR, and J Crew cashmere.

It's best to buy cashmere that's labeled Made in Scotland.

What about Jos A Banks, are they any good? They seem to be on sale at about the same price as the J Crew ones.

Specific questions:

1. What is a four-season cashmere sweater?

2. How are Filene's Basement cashmere sweater selections?

3. How much would you pay for a J.Crew cashmere sweater, and how much would a good deal be?

Incidentally, I fit great in a size 17 collar J.Crew Thomas Mason shirt, the one we all grabbed from the sale. What size sweater from J.Crew would fit me?

1. It's light, don't bother for warmth.
3. I think they go on sale for around $100, but at regular price ($170 I believe) they are still a good deal.
4. Whatever size you normally wear in S/M/L.

Would you know what collar 17 is in S/M/L? I own no items from J.Crew other than dress shirts.

1. Not warm enough for Boston winters. The cable knit ones will be a little warmer. I think they were $70 instead of $50.
2. don't know
3. They're on sale for $50 or so. That's what I would [did] pay.

You're what, about a 44 chest? My first guess is size L.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
