Buyers remorse mixed with glee

Have you ever brought a piece of clothing so perfect you were just enchanted by it, but so expensive, you couldn't believe you were actually buying it?

It happened to me today at lunch. I've been hunting tirelessly everywhere I could think of for a sportcoat and wandered into a local store. I saw a Canali sportcoat that looked OK on the rack. I tried it on just for the heck of it, but when I looked in the mirror, I was so captivated by it, I couldn't stop staring at it.

I was really on the fence about it, because it was full price, and I've never paid that much for a piece of clothing in my life and it was 3x my budget. On the one hand I feel sick about how much I paid for it, but on the other hand I'm really excited about it. It's the weirdest feeling.

What attracted you to it? Cut? Fabric? SPARKLY ADVERTISING?

First time for me was an Armani sweater a long time ago. It's been downhill ever since

Actually, while the glee part does wear off, the remorse part goes away even quicker. Even if I think I overpaid, I still can't imagine being better off without it. I still have dreams about the various items I turned my back on over the years... :'(

Saver's remorse is worse than buyer's remorse. If you hadn't bought it you would have regretted not getting it.

It's a wonderful experience and you should revel in it. The remorse part is soon forgotten, but the pleasure will be repeated every time you put the jacket on. And don't forget the story of the Irish dowager whose dying words were "I only regret my economies."

The scary thing is that the buyer's remorse usually goes away AND your level of remorse going forward will be that much higher.

It's truly an addiction.

If you're love for the piece lives on, it shouldn't be a problem. If you start noticing flaws or have trouble incorporating it in your wardrobe, then there could be risks.

Well for a few times, i think trying to justified the buying AFTER did work for me if it's really "perfect" as described. Haha.

I have done it too many times. One time I chased down a sport coat in the F/S section here and offered the person who bought it over 50% or something more than they paid for it. I just know that if I didn't buy it, I would always think of how I should have. Its just monies anyway

Most definitely, particularly when you take into account the joy achieved by schadenfreude-filled third parties.
