I'd suggest getting a relatively low-mileage American car (repairs, if needed, will be a lot cheaper), but do some research because some are better than others. I've put about 25,000 miles on a '95 Grand Am that I bought for $4000 with <50,000 mi. Absolutely no problems other than broken AC. Besides oil, the only thing I've had to change were the tires.

I'm well aware of the 944's problems. However any of the 'enthusiast' selections can easily get you negative very quickly if something goes wrong. Hence why they're enthusiast selections. And uh, the water pump on a 944 isn't really a 'small repair.' If it goes bad on you it can also result in wrecking the timing belt and the engine valves. Replacing the water pump on a regular basis is simply part of the required preventative maintenance on a 944 in order to not risk previously mentioned damage. Its an expensive bit of preventative maintenance but it only needs to get done every few years in order to be on the safe side.

The 944 would have character, that's for sure. Even if you spend half of your time broken down on the side of the road, you'll still be 100 times cooler than the guy driving a Civic (unless it's a Civic Type R).

Yeah but owning a 928 is basically like punching a hole in your bank account and watching the money pour out.

Still, you'll be cooler than all your friends. Poorer, but cooler.
