As I am not a naval admiral (or Judge Smails from Caddyshack) I want to swap out the gold buttons on my navy travel blazer, any suggestions please?

Well, first off, you needn’t be a commodore or admiral.
However, I understand have have done the same. Brown horn is a safe bet and I just did this with one of my blazers. One another I swapped out for dark gray horn.

If you don’t want to veer too far from tradition, enamel buttons are another option.

Brown horn is definitely safe. Another option that preserves the character of the blazer without the country club connotations is metal buttons in a pewter color.

I found some bronze buttons on Ebay. They have the benefit of being metal, but not too shiny.
