My buttonhole on the top button and first button of the button fly are becoming frayed and the gold thread keeping it from fraying is coming off. What can i do? I know from experience that this is not easily fixed when it has completely worn and frayed.

EDIT: oh **** thought i was in the SW&D forum. Sorry about that.

Fix it ASAP before the cloth around it becomes too frayed. With a piece of gimp (which may still be there from before, it's the thick reinforcing yarn sewn around the buttonhole) and some hand stitching you can fix the buttonhole so it is good as new or better. If it's pretty far gone, a zigzag stitch holding on a new piece of gimp will make a pretty tough buttonhole. I've had to fix/reinforce a couple of my buttonholes on jeans I wear a lot. It happens.

Yeah, this could definitely be a problem without proper lubrication.

A tailor should have gimp. I'm not sure whether you can just buy it in a fabric store or whatever, but it's basically just thick heavy duty cord that is sewn around buttonholes. Just go into a fabric store with your unbuttonable fly jeans, and say "bring out the gimp" and they'll know what's up.

i just use regular thread and just stitch around and around and around the BUTTONhole. frankly it hasn't really worked to my satisfaction. maybe i need a gimp to do it properly.
