Are there any rules stating when a buttoned-collar shirt should be worn and when a regular collar should be worn particularly in a corporate work environment?

The button-down collar is les formal, and more for sport coats & blazers than suits.

So going to a job interview that requires a suit means I should wear a regular collar?

Yes, wear a normal collar, not a button down. Also, make sure the shirt is white.

Wouldn't pale blue be a better choice? White would seem uninterested.

You don't want the interviewer to be interested in your clothes. You want them to be interested in you as a candidate for the position. Unless you happen to be applying for a job in the fashion industry...

White or light blue with a conservative tie and suit.

I am going to break ranks and say that a recent college grad can get wear a BD collar to a job interview with no ill effects. Your region and industry also matter. Trad enclaves like New England and parts of the South should be fine. Ditto academia and the like.

Also, an older gent who has worn the BA all his life and feels "himself" in it should not change just for us.

Point collar is best for an interview. Button-down collar is a long standing US biz tradition and is OK for the first (lowest) level of formality in the work place.

My mom, I recently discovered, hates button downs and thinks they look rumpled. I was surprised by the depth of her feeling.

Can't go wrong with point.
