Button down shirts with ties?

I can't find a similar thread, so here's the question for the consensus:

Can one wear button down collar shirts with a tie? I'm guessing it depends: yes for sport coats and no for suits. Can somebody confirm?

Yes you can, although some might think a button down collar was too casual for smarter suit wearing. I would do it with both if I liked the shirt.

They go with everything although a touch more casual than a shirt without. I dont like them too much though...

Weird. I have been wearing almost nothing but with suits for the last month (and with sportcoats,too).
