Business vs. Formal Dress shirts

Is there a difference between a business dress shirt and a more dressy/formal dress shirt? Like material, color, patterns, do or don'ts.

I'm finishing up my first year of University and I'm starting my job as a bank teller soon.

I need to get more dress shirts and ties. My biggest question, how do I know what is appropriate for a business setting as opposed to a formal setting (ie. wedding, dinner). Is there a difference?

Thanks guys for helping out a beginner!

In my mind, a formal shirt is a black tie shirt, such as a wing-collar shirt, with studs and cuff links. Something along these lines:

A dress shirt is a... dress shirt.

No difference unless you are talking about tux shirts v. suit shirts. Solid white is fine for either business or social. Blue is good for business.

I work at a credit union in the corporate office, and whenever I visit a branch I see the most awful-fitting black suits, parachute-sized shirts, and mega-wide ties on a lot of the guys. So as long as what you wear is properly sized (and not black) then you should be heads above the rest. Maybe they'll even say things like, "he's got middle management potential."

Just don't go too slim or fashion-forward, because then the older folks won't trust you.

Alright thanks for the advice. But in regards to the Slim Dress shirts, I'm a fairly small guy, about 5'6 130lbs. So anything other than a slim shirt and pants don't look very good on me. Slim is ok right? Just not too slim? Maybe I'll post some pics. EDIT: And Khakis, I'm getting mixed responses from friends on their appropriateness. I'm thinking of just a black pair of Khakis, or a dark grey/charcoal pair. Thoughts?

Are there other good options besides white for social occasions?
