Pretty much fucked. However, you can rent a car and drive to Montreal for a couple of days if you want a city vibe.

In Ottawa - check out the Byward Market area for nightlife. If I remember correctly from my brief time in Ottawa, that was where the majority of the bars and night related activities took place.

It feels like Switzerland; small and quaint with a lot of politicking going around.

I am aswell from NB, small world!

I definitely recommend the eastern part of Canada. You may even want to take the ferry over to Newfoundland which is very nice in the summer. Halifax is safe but it makes me laugh when people say they wouldn't go certain places at night..it's like that anywheres you go. If you put yourself in a vulnerable position then you will get burned. I would also recommend Quebec City and Montreal, very European and gorgeous in the summer. As mentioned, Ottawa is also gorgeous, the Rideau Canal is perfect for walking/running/biking.

    Ottawa? Oy...

Feel free to PM for tips. There's still some pretty decent restaurants here, but don't bother going shopping.

It's not a shithole at all. It is small and a government town so it is a little boring. If you want the outdoors, there's plenty. around. If you want the city, go to Montreal. Eat bagels right out of the oven.

Another vote for renting a car and just going to Montreal. Great, great city though it is funny, for a cosmopolitan city (as far as Canadian cosmopolitan cities go), Montreal does not have much for clothing stores. That said, great nightlife ( ;) ), restaurants (Joe Beef, Schwartz's deli, Au Pide du Couchonm etc) and just great overall people watching. I have been to Ottawa and while it is not an absolute shithole, I would not spend much time or cash there. Get there, get your work done, and get your ass to Montreal.

I've been to Montreal 4 times and agree, its a nice city. Not really interested in going here again though. I'd rather see something new.

Shit man, I am out of suggestions then, though I am sure others may have some other QC/Ontario suggestions. Ottawa though is nothing special.
