Hi!

I've spent a whole lot of time in the commercial side of business and have been into "business casuals" and worst case is a pant/tie/sports coat combo.

I have now moved into government business and I see that almost everyone is into suits and I'd like to stay in line.

I honestly don't know where to start looking for options, do's and don'ts. For example I am not sure if a sport coats could be okay etc.

Appreciate any guidance you may have for me in terms of what kind of coats, suits, pants, ties, shirts are best for this kind of business.

Thanks,

Not sure. You can probably be safe with any conservative, standard business suit in a grey or dark blue. Watch to see what the other guys are wearing, I guess.

Also, while the sport coat and tie thing is not the epitome of conservative business dress, I don't think it's a bad look at all for a lot of situations, assuming you are not an attorney or in a situation where a suit truly is needed.

Buy some books and read them? Check your co-workers? Read SF?

I don't own any suit as of now
just been living with my sports coats.

Budget - I don't know how much a decent one would cost but do understand they can be very expensive as well. I don't mind buying a few , say 3-5 priced between $200-$400 each.

Shoes - I can't remember what I have (brand) but am looking to get a new one as well.

Any recommendations in terms of stores? Is Menswarehouse a good place?

Thanks again!

I would check out "A Suitable Woredrobe," a blog which has some good, basic advice on establishing a suitable woredrobe.

Don't go to Men's Wearhouse. Avoid black suits, and square toed shoes.

Start with one suit (dark blue, charcoal, grey or brown) and send the pictures here at SF. Check which color suits you best before. Then find a tailor to alter it.

For the suit: no sack and no polyester. It will be about 250-300 to start.

Shoes: start with a black pair like the allen edmonds clifton. But buy a bargain (or a cheaper brand) at your local retailer. And buy your first pair with rubber sole, because it is winter now (in your area, too?).

Find links/ pictures of the clothes you like to buy in the net and poste them here. We will suppot you.

Yours
GN
