Business Dress in the Winter

With winter coming soon, I've been starting to think about how to dress for work when it gets cold out. Specifically, I'm wondering what sort of overcoats go best with suits and what the rules are for matching the overcoat and accessories like gloves with my shoes, belt, suit, shirt, tie, etc. I already have a full length black overcoat, but if I wear that am I limited to black shoes, a black belt and dark shoes? Thanks guys.

I am not aware of any hard fast rules regarding gloves. But I tend to match gloves to my jacket/coat and not my belt or shoes. Not exact color but something similar. I don't try to match texture, but I am sure some out there does.

For Scarf I just go for contrast, and rarely have it in any way related to pocket square or tie.

These are just my habits since I live in South CA. It is not a center of winter dress knowledge.

Not necessary as you coat is usually closed in the winter and the only visible thing is your shoes.
Buy a beige overcoat and you won't have any issues.

I have a charcoal overcoat that I tend to wear with black shoes and black gloves and grey or navy suits. I also have a camel hair overcoat that I wear with navy and grey suits, brown gloves, and brown shoes.

the choice of black for the overcoat may have not been your finest.

I do not match my coats to anything other than avoid the exact color of my pants.

I choose overcoats based on awesomeness.

I wear brown gloves with brown shoes, and black gloves with black shoes, but otherwise don't worry about any of this.

Wear the black overcoat for this winter and pick up a new coat in navy or charcoal after Christmas. I'm not a big fan of Jos. A Bank, but got a good quality charcoal overcoat real cheap in January.

I also had the same issue, my father was purchasing me my first overcoat when I was in my first year of college (and bless his heart) was simply not knowledgeable about things. Insisted I get this black wool/cashmere blend Calvin Klein monstrosity and worst of all, a size bigger than I was (or still am, for that matter) based on the reasoning that I'd be growing into it. Thanks for the gift pops, but sorry, I'm still not a 40 and it's been years.]

If you're in the New York area, go to the Barney's Warehouse sale, I think it ends the 7th. Doorbuster deals on everything. I almost picked up this 100% cashmere charcoal overcoat that fit like a dream for only $600 down from $2600, you can probably find something comparable.

I try to match my overcoats to my suits I have a black and a charcoal and a tan that I wear accordingly based on the outfit I am wearing that day.

What about a navy coat? Navy works well with most colors - grays, blues, browns.

This is pretty much my situation exactly. The black coat (which is also oversized) was a Christmas gift from my parents. I suppose I'll just have to wait for sales.
