Hi Gents,

At this moment I am choosing my first loafer, and I am choosing between 2 particular loafers in Burgundy:
1) Cheaney Lewisham

2) Crockett and Jones Boston

What do you think about style and construction differences of those?
How different they will be from the versatility and which style is more "modern" or "classic formal".

The environment which I target in my life is 25-35yo, smart casual/smart.

I like the first loafer better, especially given your age group - 25-35. The C&J model almost looks like you borrowed the shoe from your father - even though very classic and beautiful. I think I would go for something a but more "aggressive"/ modern.

I disagree. Also, your father may have impeccable taste.
I prefer the second because I find the seam extending back
from the apron a major flaw in the first one's design. The C & J manages
not to appear as though it is made from scraps of leather.
The Cheney does. In fact, I can't recall ever seeing such a seam
on a loafer.

Yeah, that seam in my concern as well, never seen any like that.

Why just these two?

#1 - the seam, as mentioned, seems like a stylistic flare but seems a bit out of place to me.

#2 - grandpa's loafers.

#1 without the seam would be perfect. Look at the C&J Sidney?

I am looking for something what I can wear with jeans/chinos /Oxford shirts/sports jackets.
I do have white sneakers, brown wingtips, black monk straps.
I want to add loafer, but not brown.

I will buy a CJ Camden in mushroom suede as a summer special shoe.

But as something a bit less casual, there are only CJ/Cheaney /trickers.

I am 35 and prefer the Crockett & Jones. Yes, it has 'an older man' look but if you are in a professional environment that might not be a bad thing if you want to look good in the eyes of your superiors. If you have read the book, 'How to Win Friends and Influence People' you will understand why.

The Cheaney is not bad but that back seam is over the top.

I actually say neither, because the Cheaney is strange and the Crockett's is using bookbinder leather which is not going to give you a great bang for your buck. I say keep searching for a better option. There is plenty out there if you look hard enough

Hello Sir,

It is a honour to get comment from you! You are a very respected specialist in the field.

Unfortunately Carmina cordovan is out of my reach.
I do not have target to impress superiors, I am not in the strict ierarchy.
It is more about being myself, but having a good solid piece of craftsmanship, versatile enough to serve me for years.

What do you think about Trickers Jason?

I’m old … and not surprisingly in the C&J camp. Whichever you choose, think about longevity … you may have them for decades.

Prefer #2 Crockett and Jones: the color, a richer burgundy (at least on my computer) is more appealing.
The seam on the Cheaney just looks weird, like its hiding a wing that may flap out at inopportune times.

Personally don't like the machine sewn apron and the stitching on the quarters for the Cheneay model. I like that C&J though.
