Burberry Prorsum Trench Coat - any alternatives?

I'd like to get a new trench coat and am considering one by Burberry Prorsum. First question - do you think it's worth the money given a Prorsum trench is more than twice the cost of a regular Burberry Trench and about 10 times the cost of fairly nice looking trench from J Crew? Secondly, are there any good alternatives?

My intention is to make a one time purchase that I'll keep the rest of my life but probably only wear 10-15 times a year.

Mine is a navy issue one. Fits well, zip out lining, and keeps water off. Maybe not all the bells and whistles the much more expensive ones you're looking at may offer, but I doubt its going anywhere, and it serves its use quite well.

Of course, I usually find myself throwing on my black mac anyway...

I'm not sure the Prorsum is significantly better and want to avoid falling into a marketing/branding ploy.

At full price, probably not. On sale is another thing.

Good alternatives would be Grenfall from The Armoury, or Aquascutum. Both are also English producers of trenchcoats with some history.

I probably will get the Prorsum, but still trying to figure out if/why it is better a regular Burberry Trench available at Neiman Marcus @ around $1K

It depends on what look you want. Prosrum is the fashion forward almost-runway branch of Burberry. Personally, I think the Brit trenches look the best.

Well there are usually minor details just like with any other luxury brand that hits multiple price points. In general, the materials will be slightly better, the finish slightly better (leather detailing, no visible Burberry check, etc) and Prorsum is usually made in UK or Italy, whereas Brit and London are often, if not exclusively, made in China. It's a bit of a generalization, but for the most part that is it.

I liked the London, but ended up buying the Prorsum. The Brit is a nice value, but it didn't feel as well made as the others. The material is definitely different, but then so is the price.

The London I tried was made in the UK whereas the Prorsum I bought is made in Italy.

I have the Prorsum and really like it. I got it at half price from MrPorter and can't imagine ever needing another trench.

I got a gray Prorsum trench, the finishing and fabric are superb, and it fits me better than any trenchcoat I've tried. No swimming in excess material and I can still wear a suit under it.

Are all Prorsum items slim fit?

I grabbed a Prorsum navy trench from Mr. Porter's 50% sale and am highly impressed. It fits fairly slim and the fabric/construction are amazing. I also own a London trench and the Prorsum blows it away in fit/finish.

I'm thinking of grabbing another coat off Mr. Porter, but can't tell how the coats fit b/c the model is wearing sweaters, etc. under the coats making them look baggy.

Most of the Prorsum items are cut slimmer.

You can check the Mr Porter measurements and compare to your best fitting equivalent piece of clothing.

My advice would be:
Prosum or not, a standard length, just at or below the knee, will serve you well over the span of decades.
Aquascutum is an excellent alternative; equal in quality and has enjoyed plenty of celebrity endorsement (Pierce Brosnan, Peter Sellers, Michael Caine, Humphrey Bogart, etc)
No matter the make, avoid the micro-fibre or synthetic models. They (micro-fibre models) won't take the beating that gaberdine will and will not look as good for as long.
If money is a concern then consider a pre-owned trench. There are plenty of them on Ebay, etc
