Since it is near the end of the fall season, I took my Burberry trench coat to be dry cleaned today. I stopped by the very reputable Holly Cleaners in Boston. There I was informed that after dry cleaning, the coat would no longer be waterproof as the waterproof coating would be washed away.

My trench coat is still relatively new (purchased at the end of the summer) and even though it has picked up some stains from regular wear, the surface still repels water. If you drip some water on it, the water rolls right off.

I had assumed (as Burberry has advertised) that this property of the fabric was due to the weave, and not due to some type of surface treatment.

Is it true that Burberry trench coats lose their water resistance with dry cleaning?

If so, are there any reputable cleaners in the US who can successfully re-apply the water resistant coating?

I remember reading (some time ago...) that part of gabardine's water resistance is due not only to the weave of the twill fabric, but also some treatment (chemical?) of the thread before the fabric is woven. I have no idea if that's true today, nor if it would be removed by dry cleaning.
