Do you think brown shoes would be appropriate?
I hear mixed opinions... I like the look of brown shoes with gray/navy suit but don't want to be perceived as a dbag or something like this by the more senior workers at my new job (my new work is going to be in the financial services).

I have a pair of black shoes... want to buy another pair... not sure if another black or dark brown shoes, though.

    Thanks

I doubt anyone will notice, and if they do, I can't imagine their response would be negative. Go for the brown.

Assuming this is not for an interview and you already have the job, the brown shoes should be fine.

Best scenario: wear your black shoes for the first day or two. If you notice others in the office with non-black shoes, you should be fine.

Probably not a big deal in the NYC area. Although your best bet in this, and any situation, is to err on the conservative side until you have actually entered your new environment. Once there, take a look at what your immediate supervisor and his peer are wearing.

Mimick accordingly. And then build your own personal interpretation of the 'office norm' once you have first mastered it.

Black is not as versatile as people think. One pair of black shoes is fine.

A very versatile color which is always under rated is dark Burgundy which matches anything, from blacks greys and blues through to brown and khaki.

I have to agree on this. Burgundy just looks better and complements a lot more shades than the classic brown.

I don't see how wearing brown shoes can be seen to be erring away from conservative dress - wear brown with grey or navy blue.

As an opposite opinion, brown shoes are really the better choice for gray suits. Generally speaking about 50% of guys who wear suits don't know enough to notice and the 50% who do, will appreciate that you're not another putz who thinks your black square toe slip-ons match everything . . . .

Really agree with everyone. I work in the financial industry and I very seldom wear black shoes to grey or navy suits.

Burgundy is a really great color if you're planning on changing the brown one.
