what color socks?

also, what color browns work? would the barker black brown suede and leather wingtips or suese brown loafers work with grey pants?

Socks should match the colour of your trousers. So Grey socks.

almost any brown, even tan, are possible depending on other things, e.g., shade of gray, formality

If it's gray odd pants you could go with argyles. I would go with argyles or something brightly colored reds pinks sky blues greens etc.

My absolute favorite is a warmer color gray pant with a chestnut colored shoe. For some reason, that is a more sophisticated look in my mind than most. It's subtle, but I think it's a lot easier to tell quality with a chestnut colored shoe on first glance than many colors, but maybe that's just me.
