Are they of decent quality?

For these below, how does the perforation detail and cap toe affect its "style"? Meaning does it make it more or less dressy/formal or more or less suitable with a paticular kind of suit or more appropriate for certain professions?

Please educate. Thank you.

Actually, no, not more versatile. The first pair you posted are an oxford or a balmoral (or actually a modified wholecut, but that's not an important distinction). The second are bluchers, which means the vamp, or the long part at the front of the shoe, runs directly up into the tongue. The rules say that a bal is good with a suit while a blucher is not, but there are people who disagree. The wiki article here is a good place to get edumacated.

Of the Brooks Brothers selection in the category you linked, these are the most conservative and in some respects versatile. They are fine for essentially any situation in any profession, but might be too formal to wear with odd trousers.

Hmmm. Something strange here. Those second pair, while Goodyear welted, are neither Made in USA, England, or Italy. Instead, they are "imported." I don't think they are Alden or Peal.

Use the 30% off code for Polo (does it still work through today?), spend a little more, and get these in dark brown. Order a couple sizes (shipping will be free), since the sizing on these is a bit unique. Much, much better than the BB shoes and certainly worth an extra $50 - $100.

Damn -- it's expired. Still, if you can wait, I'm sure there will be another code sent out during the summer.

Any of these various shoes come in very narrow sizes? Nothing online indicates this.

If not, would someone explain the appropriate technique for adding orthotics or inserts to make a wider shoe fit a narrow foot? (I'm an 8.5 B, as far as I can tell, there are maybe four pairs of dress shoes that might fit me--in the country).

If you're an 8.5 B, why not try to find a pair of Alden on Ebay? I see narrow sizes fairly often.

If I were you I would call your nearest Polo store and talk to a friendly salesperson. First see if they have the style and size that you want, then mention the "Friends and Family" discount and that you know you just missed the sale and then ask would they be willing to extend the discount to you. The salesperson will say he will have to check with his manager but they may just honor it. Sounds crazy but worked for me. . . .

Just wanted to drop a note. I found a nice used pair that are worn but still in great shape. I have 15 hours to wait, but the starting price is promising. Thanks a lot for the suggestion, really: I've been looking for anything that fits me for about a month now.

BTW, anyone have suggestions on making bigger shoes fit smaller feet?

Insoles of varying thicknesses, or tongue pads can snug up a loose shoe easily.
