The Brooks Brothers single-row of brass studs shoes are reportedly Crockett and Jones. I am particularly interested in the monkstraps. What grade do these correspond to in C&J: benchgrade, handgrade, etc.?

    Thanks.

I just picked up a pair of the monks during the BB sale in black. They are not the handgrade level of C&J, rather the bench grade level. Still, in my estimation they are fine shoes, well made and a fair value. I preferred the elongated shape to the clumsier Alden model, and the buckle was less obtrusive as well.

Would someone be so kind as to provide some background material on these shoes? I know nothing about Crockett and Jones and wonder what the issue is. Are Brooks Brothers shoes all of a certain lineage? Are they high quality or a good value? And did I miss a great sale? Thanks.

Quick summary from what I've learned.

Brooks Brothers shoses are a pretty good value. You can get the equivalent shoes from the UK a bit cheaper, but then you don't get to try the shoes on and you have to deal with shipping from the UK (plus, having a Brooks nearby means you can easily return them if you change your mind).

    The lineage of the shoes:

If the shoes say Made in USA they are probably made by Alden. The cordovans are made by Alden.

If the shoes say Peal & Co., they are made by one of two British makers. If they have two rows of brass studs in the heal, they are probably made by Alfred Sargent. If they have one row, they are probably made by Crockett & Jones. Both makers are good.

I haven't figured out who makes the Made in Italy shoes, but I haven't cared since I've gone with Peal & Co. and cordovans.

Today is the last day of the sale (6/30/2004). All shoes except cordovans are 25% off (in NY on Madison, some are 40% off), and cordovans are $50 off. Pretty much everything else in the store is on sale as well.,
