Gents,

Please help me with some confusion. I was at a Brooks Brothers store this week and they have their OTR suits and Ready Made suits around ($600) and Made to Order around ($600). First off, I am being informed the Ready Made is half-canvassed and not fused. Secondly, I am curious to know if anyone has experience with Ready Made or MTO. If so what are your thoughts? I get 15% discount on any BB regular price items so I am leaning towards buying my next suit from them.

I don't know what MTO suit is,is it possible that you are confusing it with MTM (made to measure) suit? If that's the case, if you like the ready to wear suit but it doesn't fit you well, made to measure would be a good way to get a well fitting suit.

MTO means they use the standard pattern, but you can specify certain things like: color, fabric, vents, pant size, pleats, and other small tidbits. Nothing really major though.

I'd rather do MTM, much more customization.

No ******* clue what ready made even means.

Ahhh maybe I am just better off waiting for a sale and buying Zegna or something... I am slimmer fitting so it can be difficult finding quality suits under $1,000

From how you define BB's MTO, I thought that was what their MTM was -- a standard pattern, but more careful measurements and your choice of fabrics and other small details. But in the end, it's still a BB suit. Or is the diff between MTO and MTM that MTO uses the sames pattern as RTW, meaning the sizes avalable will be RTW sizes? I ask because I have some BB shirts that I thought were MTM (but very def not custom-made) in which the style was RTW but I picked the fabrics and there was a tailor taking my measurements. But maybe I was just getting MTO?

Yes. MTO uses the same pattern as RTW. MTM alters the standard patterns to your body's measurements. For example, lets say you have a really fit body and want your suit to have an 8" drop. Well, MTO won't do that, but MTM can. I say can because your measured by the salesperson, not a trained tailor,a nd there's a huge disconnect between the factory, your measurements, the tailor, etc etc. But MTM does alter the pattern. How much depends on the maker.

I don't know the answer to your second question. If the shirts have a tag that say 15/32 or similar, it was just made to order. If not, but the shirts still fit exactly the same as one of their RTW offerings in a certain size, its still MTO.

If they fit your body like a glove, you are either blessed with the "standard" body, or you have MTM.

I think I have MTM. Just checked the shirts -- no size tag anywhere. And the fit is far better than RTW.

I know BB gets (something of ) a bad rap here, but I've always found them to be a better value than pretty much any other American men's clothes maker. And a much much better value than, say, Anderson and Sheppard. It all comes down to liking their style.

If BB's not to your taste, then there's no point. I've been wearing BB (and J.Press) since I was just out of diapers. Had BB offered diapers, I would have worn them. I keep telling myself to try something more stylish but in the end, I come back to my first love. Especially if it's BB's MTM purchased when they're offering a deal.
