I recently bought these two blazers on ebay: 44L http://cgi.ebay.com/ws....7964169 44R http://cgi.ebay.com/ws....MEWN:IT When do you think these were made, and what do you guys think about the quality? I just bought them as casual navy blazers and they were cheap, but I was wondering if Brooks navy blazers had changed in quality or appearance much over the past 20 years...

I picked up a Brooks db blazer recently (not sure of the vintage) that I really love. For my purposes (especially at the price I paid--$5 in pretty much 'as new' condition) it's great. I think for casual use yours would certainly be fine. The first auction link no longer has pictures (or didn't when I clicked).

Sometimes you can tell more about blazer by the Brooks labels.

There is the older Golden Fleece line tag, the old 346 and "University Shop". The labels have been revised over the years, I believe. But I haven't closely observed this. It just struck me last time I was at shop.

There's also the older jacket label on inside chest in gold script.

I think they switched over to block writing with with lettering?

I may be wrong, but doesn't the "346" label identify the garment as having been sold from a BB outlet? I picked up a pair of linen pants a year or two ago at the outlet in Flemington (NJ) with the 346 label. They were, as best I was able to tell, identical to a pair being sold in the mall store at the same time.

I think that's right Tiger -- the only place I've ever seen the 346 label is at BB outlet stores.

I could only view the pictures in the second auction, but in that one, the seller clearly could have gotten more money if he had just taken the time to post good pictures.... It's impossible to tell squat about the jacket, fabric, etc. from the picture.

By the way, according to A. Harris, BB got its blazers (perhaps just Golden Fleece ones though) from Isaia for a brief period. They can be identified by the "made in Italy" designation and the large amount of pick-stitching; perhaps also by the inner label (the one w/fabric content, size, etc.). I've located these on EBay (never bought any though) by doing a search for "Brooks Blazer Italy" (or something like that) and checking the box for searching the description as well as the auction title.

Yeah, the 2nd blazer seems to be really nice, and very new (or at least extremely well preserved) The first one is a slightly better fit for me though.

The 346 label was sold, at one time, as a sort of "entry-level" (to lapse into market-speak) type of garment for young people or business people who were just into their first job.

I think someone here, perhaps Mr. Pollack or another equally well-versed, mentioned something about the history of the 346 line.

Perhaps now it is used in outlets.

I've been looking (but not buying) on Ebay, and if you want a good blazer, why not try there. I've seen a few of the older models of the Brooks blazer, and the quality is good and the price is certainly right.
