I just returned from a visit to Chicago and was impressed at the clothing available that was on sale at Brooks Bros on Michigan Ave. The selection is much, much more than I've seen in other stores in other cities.

Golden Fleece suits were nearly $700 off regular price. I picked up a handsome wool flannel dark gray SB with rose chalk stripes and side vents.

They've also got one over on LaSalle in the building with my eye-doctor. Has anyone been into that one at all?

That would be the Rookery building, designed by Holabird & Root, lobby by Frank Lloyd Wright.

I just don't think Chicago retailing is the same without Marshall Field's! MACY*S IMO made a huge-mongous marketing mistake!

I'm old enough to remember Baskins, Litton's, Rothschilds clothing stores- all gone!

Marshall Field's mens clothing and shoes was going downhill long before they changed the name to Macys.

And Bloomingdales now occupies Medinah Temple where the CSO made all those great recordings with Solti. Marshall Fields...nothing endures forever.

Chicago's my home town but I haven't been there in over a generation. Sorry to hear some of your opinions that Field's was slipping, but the childhood memories are strong and it will always occupy a fond spot in my heart. Any "baby boomers" here remember that huge toy department in two castle-sized rooms on State? That was the stuff of dreams. I guess I never imagined that the Carson Pirie Scott name would endure longer than Fields.
When these things happen, they just make us 50-somethings feel even older! I remember the days of SIX huge department stores lining State Street. Now thanks to mergers, international Wal-Mart and suburban shopping malls, I wager there isn't a city in the world with six downtown department stores and probably not many with even three!
