But if you are college student maybe you need something you can live out of for a few days. Some sort of messenger bag is probably the way to go. A light to medium brown in quality leather is going to work up a beautiful patina pretty quick, esp. if you use a good quality leather conditioner on it now and again.

I wouldn't worry too much about maximizing versatility. In a few years you'll probably buy another. Buy what looks awesome to you now & fits your budget. And buy quality if you can.
